Dear Alumni and Friends,
Fall is always an exciting time in Chemistry, when our classrooms and laboratories fill with eager students embarking on the study and practice of chemistry. We’re pleased to bring you this update on our community as we both look forward to the year ahead and reflect on some our recent activities and achievements.
Two new faculty members joined Chemistry this summer, and in this issue of e-Distillations, we introduce you to Professors Mark Wilson and Andrew Beharry. We also feature the teaching achievements of Professor Andy Dicks, recently named 3M National Teaching Fellow, and the research of Professor Mark Taylor, recipient of the prestigious McLean Award for 2016. Finally, we travel to Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya with members of the Wheeler Lab, who spent 4 weeks there this summer testing for measles and rubella using their DropBot open-source microfluidic device.
Thanks to the support of many dedicated alumni, we are also delighted to announce that our Graduate Studies office will launch the Chemistry Graduate Mentorship Program in January 2017. This pilot project pairs current graduate students with alumni now working in professional capacities, and we are excited to offer this new professional development initiative to our students. We are most appreciative of your ongoing support!

Introducing Professors Mark Wilson and Andrew Beharry
We are pleased to welcome Professors Mark Wilson and Andrew Beharry who joined the Department as new faculty members July 1, 2016. Wilson, a physical chemist at the St. George campus, is undertaking spectroscopy of excitonic systems with the aim of enabling optoelectronic devices. Beharry is a bioorganic chemist based at the University of Toronto Mississauga focused on the development of molecular probes to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Professor Andy Dicks named 3M National Teaching Fellow
Professor Andy Dicks has been inspiring chemistry undergrads at UofT since 1999. This year, he was recognized for his efforts by 3M Canada and the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and named one of ten 3M National Teaching Fellows for 2016.

Wheeler Group at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya
This summer, members of the Wheeler Lab spent four weeks at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, testing for measles and rubella using their DropBot open-source microfluidic device. The group performed more than 600 assays during their stay, which was funded by Grand Challenges Canada.
